A garage door that hangs crooked, jerks, or sits with a loose cable coiled on one side has a cable or roller problem.
Cables are the part nobody thinks about until the door is hanging sideways. Two steel cables run from the bottom corners of the door up to the drums on the spring shaft, and they do the actual lifting. When one frays through, usually at the bottom where it rubs the bracket, the door drops on that side and jams.
Rollers are the other quiet wear item. Most Fort Collins homes were built with steel rollers that squeal and chew the track once the bearings go. Swapping them for sealed nylon is one of the best value upgrades on a garage door, and the pros we refer do it in the same visit as a cable job.
| Repair | Typical Fort Collins range |
|---|---|
| Lift cables, pair, replaced and tensioned | $140 to $260 |
| Roller replacement, full set of 10 nylon rollers | $150 to $300 |
| Cables and rollers together | $250 to $450 |
| Bottom bracket or drum replacement | $120 to $220 added |
A cable job turns into a spring job about a third of the time, because the spring breaking is what threw the cable off the drum. The tech tells you before starting.
Cables are under the same tension as the springs. Pulling a loose cable back onto its drum by hand has cost people fingers. Unplug the opener, leave the door where it is, and call.
